Today, I’ll be showing you guys what I did for my pop-up book project in relation to show interactivity. It was a tough project, because not just the level of interactivity taken into consideration, but the level of skill needed to craft the paper model. I started off with some inspiration, but there was no reference was used for my pop-up technique. My ideas was sorely based on the past project in handling with paper for 3D paper modelling. Due to this, I took a lot of time visualizing.
The title was Life of John: Journey to Canada. It’s actually my story while I travel to Canada. It shows the process and procedure which finally got me to my destination. Here’s some photos to show the progress of my project. A thick paper was used in order to maintain the form of the pop-up.
okay, so I didnt take many pictures, but I can explain the details of the process. Here’s the house, depicting that I actually rented a house to stay for the semester. It folds up nicely when closed, and opens into a house.
The general formation of the house is basically made into a box. You can just imagine how to make paper cube box. When opened, inside there’s me wearing a windbreaker. This is to show how cold it is for me to be here.
Here’s the part telling how troublesome for me to pack my bag, I even have to make sure it doesn’t over weight. So, I labelled it as an important procedure for me to travel. Look, this component of the bag actually slides open when you pull, and goes back into shape when you release it. It’s sort of a expandable component.
This is how the bag pack looks like 🙂
Lastly, here’s the drawer for keeping the clothes back from the bag pack.
Problems that I encountered and solutions:
1. I find that using glue would be a classic conventional way of making pop-up book, but it is hard to control and it smudges the paper easily. In class, I found out others would use double-sided tapes to having clean surfaces.
2. Next, I find that many people does not understand my pop-ups well. I still think that a certain amount of descriptions like the red arrow I just drew needed for the audience to approach the interactive material.
3. It certainly need more colours, because the human eyes are sensitive to contrast images. So, it depends on where would you want to add colour, the audience would simply react to it.
Hope you guys enjoy watching me making this cute project. Have fun!!!
